A Life-Changing Journey in STEM Education

Throughout the years, I have been constantly inspired by how much our programs truly change lives. I am thrilled to share an amazing journey that began with a NASA grant in 2022 and culminated in an incredible visit to the Kennedy Space Center in 2024. This story highlights our unwavering commitment to making STEM accessible, exciting, and impactful for students in our community.

The NASA Community Anchor Grant: A Proud Recognition

In 2022, the Long Island Explorium was honored as one of just two institutions in New York—and one of only 21 nationwide—to receive a NASA Community Anchor grant. This prestigious recognition distinguished us as leaders in space science education, particularly for communities with less access to such opportunities.

This grant opened the door to the transformative “Students to Launch” program, led by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA). This initiative focused on middle school students—an age group that had not previously been the primary audience for our programs—and offered them the unique opportunity to engage in design challenges and witness a live rocket launch at the Kennedy Space Center.

Bringing STEM to Life: From Simulated Projects to Real-World Launches

The excitement began in November 2022 with our first STEM Hub event. Students from Riverhead, Rocky Point, and Comsewogue participated in a simulated aerospace project, where they were guided by top STEM educators, including Discovery Channel’s Josh Bernstein.

During this event, students designed protective devices for astronauts, which were tested under simulated space conditions. These hands-on activities not only taught valuable problem-solving and teamwork skills but also ignited their passion for STEM.

The journey reached its pinnacle in June 2024 with a trip to Florida’s Space Coast. Students toured the Kennedy Space Center, met NASA experts, and witnessed a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket launch. This experience was far more than a field trip; it was an inspiring glimpse into the possibilities of STEM careers, showing young learners that they, too, could play a role in future aerospace adventures..

Sparking a Passion for STEM Careers

The “Students to Launch” program expanded our reach and sparked new interest in science and technology. It demonstrated that these fields are not only accessible but also exciting and full of potential. This initiative proved that museums like the Long Island Explorium are powerful agents of change, fostering innovation and empowerment right here on Long Island.

Through these efforts, we remain dedicated to breaking down educational barriers, raising awareness of STEM careers, and ensuring that our programs are inclusive, engaging, and impactful.

This journey has filled me with immense pride and optimism. It reminds me of the incredible potential within each child and the vital role we play in unlocking that potential.

Opening Doors for All: Promoting Educational Equity and Empowering Girls in STEM

Thanksgiving is almost here, and I can’t stop thinking about one major issue: why are girls still so underrepresented in STEM? It’s almost 2024, and yet, we’re still seeing far too few girls in science, technology, engineering, and math. It baffles and frustrates me — how can this still be happening when technology and science are advancing so rapidly?

As a mom of a curious sixth grader and someone leading the charge at the Long Island Explorium, I’m passionate about smashing these old stereotypes. Why is it that girls from less affluent districts face such steep challenges in STEM, while their counterparts in wealthier areas have it so much easier? It’s heartbreaking to see such bright, eager minds miss out on opportunities just because of where they live. This isn’t only about grades or school performance; it affects these girls’ futures, their career paths, and their dreams.

I’m determined to level the playing field, not just for my daughter but for every child. We all need to push harder to ensure that girls everywhere can aim high in STEM — and achieve their full potential.

The Urgent Need for Strategic Leadership in STEM

At the Long Island Explorium, we refuse to accept the status quo. We are at the forefront of a vital movement to transform how girls perceive and engage with STEM subjects. Our strategic leadership is not just about encouraging participation; it’s about revolutionizing the entire educational landscape to ensure that girls are not just included, but are also empowered to lead and innovate. The potential for growth and advancement in STEM is immense, but only if we tap into the full spectrum of talent that includes the bright young minds of all our girls.

Under my leadership, the Long Island Explorium has been at the forefront of transforming STEM education landscapes. Our approach isn’t just about providing access—it’s about reshaping how communities perceive and engage with STEM, ensuring these fields are seen as accessible and vital for girls. This strategic vision drives our mission, leading to growth and innovation in how we educate and inspire.

Why Focus on Girls in STEM?

Despite progress in gender equality, significant barriers persist in many industries, particularly in STEM. Girls are often steered toward traditionally “feminine” professions by societal norms and stereotypes. As someone born in Southeast Asia, I’ve witnessed firsthand how access to education can drastically change a girl’s life. In regions where educational opportunities are limited, not having access to schooling can mean the difference between empowerment and marginalization. It can determine whether a girl can achieve financial independence or remains dependent on others, whether she can voice her opinions or stays silent. This contrast is not just a reality in Southeast Asia but a global issue that needs addressing. In the U.S., while education is more accessible, ensuring that it is equitable and inclusive remains a challenge, leaving many girls underprepared for the high-tech jobs of tomorrow.

This partnership amplifies our commitment and broadens our impact, engaging us with a network of institutions that are equally dedicated to changing the future of STEM by supporting today’s girls

Our commitment goes beyond typical educational outreach. We understand that to truly shift the community and societal mindset, the narrative around women in STEM needs to evolve. Thus, our programs also focus on community engagement—inviting families, educators, and community leaders to participate and witness the incredible capabilities of their children in STEM. This broader community involvement helps to dismantle longstanding stereotypes and builds a supportive ecosystem that encourages girls to pursue and excel in STEM careers.

The impact of our efforts is significant not only for the individuals we reach but for the nation as a whole. Promoting diversity in STEM leads to a more competitive, dynamic, and innovative workforce, which is crucial for the country’s economic growth and technological advancement. Companies that embrace diversity are better able to attract top talent, improve their customer orientation, employee satisfaction, and decision-making processes, leading to a 19% increase in revenue from innovation (Bourke & Dillon, 2018).

By investing in girls’ STEM education, we are preparing a generation that will tackle the world’s challenges with fresh perspectives and diverse strategies. Our work at the Long Island Explorium is a beacon of progress, demonstrating what is possible when girls are supported and empowered in STEM. With every young mind we inspire, we are one step closer to a more inclusive and equitable society.

The grants we secure, like those from the IF/THEN Initiative, propel us forward and amplify our impact, allowing us to challenge and change the narrative around women in STEM.

However, support from corporations are needed to sufficiently move the needle forward. We are rigorous in our approach to program development, ensuring that every initiative delivers measurable results. Why? Because we cannot afford to guess when it comes to education equity. Our programs are designed to do more than just teach—they transform. They build confidence, spark curiosity, and open up a world of possibilities for girls, demonstrating with clear evidence the power of including diverse voices in STEM.

Research shows that early exposure to STEM during childhood greatly increases the likelihood of choosing a STEM career. We integrate advanced STEM concepts into our programs for young learners, making sure these subjects are accessible, engaging, and fun. This early engagement is vital as it helps reduce gender gaps before they can fully develop. Our programs include hands-on activities that challenge the students to solve problems, work in teams, and think critically—skills that are essential for any career but particularly valuable in STEM fields. Recent statistics highlight the urgency of our mission. According to the National Girls Collaborative Project, while women make up half of the college-educated workforce, they are significantly underrepresented in science and engineering occupations, holding less than 30% of these roles. This discrepancy isn’t just a gap in the workforce; it’s a gap in our society’s potential to innovate and solve pressing problems.

Moreover, girls’ participation in STEM activities from an early age is pivotal. Data shows that girls who are encouraged by an adult to pursue STEM are 1.9 times more likely to continue those subjects later in school. At the Explorium, we take this to heart by ensuring that every program we offer not only teaches STEM skills but also mentors and encourages girls to see themselves as future leaders in these fields.

As we gather this Thanksgiving, let’s give thanks to not only for what we have but also for the opportunities we can create for future generations. The gender gap in STEM is not just a problem for girls; it’s a problem for all of us. It limits our progress, stifles our innovation, and narrows our perspectives.

I urge you—parents, educators, industry leaders, and all who believe in a fair and equitable society—to join us in this critical mission. From Curiosity to Innovation: How the Long Island Explorium Meets STEM Education’s Challenges with Community-Focused Solutions

As we celebrate the Long Island Explorium’s 20th anniversary, we reflect on our mission to provide engaging, inclusive, and meaningful STEM education to students and families across Long Island. Since our founding in 2004, we’ve seen the educational landscape evolve, and we’ve adapted to meet the needs of a changing community, all while remaining focused on delivering high-quality, hands-on learning experiences.

Understanding the Challenge: Inclusive, Future-Focused STEM Education

One of the main challenges in STEM education today is balancing inclusivity with real-world relevance. In response, educational stakeholders, including the New York State Education Department, are moving toward more personalized, culturally responsive, and skill-based frameworks. Recent initiatives like the NY Inspires Plan and the Culturally Responsive-Sustaining (CR-S) Education Framework aim to broaden the ways students engage with content, making learning experiences more reflective of students’ diverse backgrounds and aspirations.

Our constructivist approach aligns naturally with this educational vision. By encouraging hands-on engagement and critical thinking, our programs allow students to take ownership of their learning. This approach is not only student-centered but also prepares students with the essential skills needed to thrive in the modern workforce—adaptability, collaboration, and resilience.

Long Island Explorium Secures Grant to Launch “Summer Sparks: Empowering Futures in STEM” Program in Underserved Communities

Port Jefferson, NY — The Long Island Explorium is honored to be one of 10 science centers and museums across the country selected to receive $15,000 in support of youth STEM engagement from the Association of Science and Technology Centers (ASTC), made possible by the Voya Foundation. This award will fund the innovative “Summer Sparks: Empowering Futures in STEM” program, a series of engaging STEM events aimed at reaching underserved BIPOC and low-income students through partnerships with local public libraries.

This summer, the Explorium will host four dynamic “Summer Sparks” STEM events at public libraries in underserved communities. These events are designed to be fun, engaging, and completely free, providing a critical educational resource during the summer months. Each event will feature pop-up exhibits, hands-on activities, and interactive workshops, all aimed at fostering a passion for scientific exploration and introducing children to diverse STEM careers in children aged 9-14.

“Through the ‘Summer Sparks’ program, we are committed to making STEM education accessible and exciting for all children, especially those in communities traditionally underserved by science and technology resources,” said Angeline Judex, Executive Director of the Long Island Explorium. “By hosting these events in local libraries, we are removing barriers to participation and aiming to inspire a new generation of scientists and engineers.”

The program includes:

Pop-Up Exhibits and Hands-On Activities : Themes include earth and space science, environmental sustainability, and an introduction to diverse STEM careers. Building on our past work as a NASA Community Anchor, we will showcase earth and space science, highlighting professionals contributing to critical NASA missions.
Hands-on STEM Workshops : Interactive sessions based on the Explorium’s award-winning curriculum, focusing on real-world STEM applications and featuring role models from the STEM sector.
Take-Home Kits : To extend learning, participants will receive kits with activities and resources to continue their STEM exploration at home.

The Explorium expects to engage 400-600 students through the “Summer Sparks” program, building on a strong history of collaboration with local libraries and community centers. This initiative is part of a broader effort to make STEM accessible to all children, regardless of their background.

NASA Selects the Long Island Explorium to Receive the Teams Engaging Affiliated Museums and Informal Institutions (TEAM II) Community Anchor Award.

The Long Island Explorium is pleased to announce their selection as a recipient of the NASA Teams Engaging Affiliated Museums and Informal Institutions (TEAM II) Community Anchor Award with their project “ Seeking the Wisdom of the Stars to Help Understand Planet Earth.” The Explorium’s program will bring space exploration to traditionally underserved areas and broaden student participation in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).

The Explorium has historically implemented programs on STEM topics that are wide-ranging. Angeline Judex, MPA, Executive Director, Long Island Explorium , explains, “We want all students of families of these areas and beyond to see science as a realistic and feasible goal for discovery and career. STEM training supports the development of critical thinking skills that can be used across industries and enhance career options by providing skills that are highly valued in the job market. Utilizing NASA’s content and materials, this program will expose hard ‐ to ‐ reach populations to STEM concepts centered on our solar system and space through NASA’s materials. Additionally, this program will be a catalyst in stimulating the interest of Black, Indigenous, People of Color, and Latinx (BIPOCL) in STEM careers to strengthen the pipeline of future scientists and engineers and fill the representation gap in STEM careers.”

The Explorium is 1 of 21 of award recipients selected nationally representing 16 states and only 1 of 2 NY based organizations to receive this award. The designation as a community anchor recognizes an institution as a local community resource. The projects bring space exploration to traditionally underserved areas and broaden student participation in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Leaders of the selected projects will form the inaugural group of a NASA Informal Education Learning Cohort, organized by the NASA Museum and Informal Education Alliance .

“NASA has bold, long-term goals, so it’s critically important that we reach students where they are and create opportunities for them to experience those feelings of discovery and confidence that STEM engagement is really all about,” said Mike Kincaid, NASA’s associate administrator for STEM engagement. “The Community Anchor Awards will help us reach a diverse audience while sharing and supporting NASA’s missions and future plans.”

The Long Island Explorium will continue to address community needs related to STEM engagement by using and sharing NASA STEM engagement learning resources and opportunities. The designation includes funding to support the organizations’ proposals to strengthen their local STEM impact.

Long Island Explorium Wins Prestigious Engaging Communities Award from the Museum Association of New York

(Long Island, NY) – The Long Island Explorium is thrilled to announce that it has been honored with the prestigious Engaging Communities Award from the Museum Association of New York for its outstanding program, “A Visual Dialogue on Environmental Issues.” The Award of Merit recognizes organizations that utilize innovative and creative methods to engage their communities and build new audiences, fostering dialogue and enrichment through their projects.

The Museum Association of New York’s Awards of Merit, presented as part of the 2022 Annual Conference “Envisioning Our Museums for the Seventh Generation” at the Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, NY, recognized the Long Island Explorium as one of the top ten recipients among over 50 nominations across six categories. The Engaging Communities Award, specific to community engagement efforts, was awarded to the Long Island Explorium in recognition of its remarkable work.

“A Visual Dialogue on Environmental Issues,” a collaborative effort between the Long Island Explorium and Stony Brook University, is a pioneering exhibition that encourages dialogue about environmental issues through student-produced art. The Review Committee was deeply impressed by the exhibition’s educational impact and its ability to foster important conversations around environmental topics.

“We are truly honored to receive the Engaging Communities Award from the Museum Association of New York,” said Angeline Judex, Executive Director of the Long Island Explorium. “This award is a testament to the dedication of our team and our commitment to engaging and educating our community. We are proud to have partnered with Stony Brook University to create an exhibition that sparks conversations about vital environmental issues.”

The Award Ceremony will take place on Monday, April 11, 2022, at 12:00 PM at the Hilton Garden Inn Corning, where representatives of the Long Island Explorium will accept this distinguished accolade.

The Long Island Explorium, in partnership with Stony Brook University Visual Arts students, presents: A Visual Dialogue on Environmental Issues.

The Long Island Explorium is pleased to announce “A Visual Dialogue on Environmental Issues,”; a digital art exhibit produced in partnership with Stony Brook University Visual Arts students. This Exhibition is a collaboration between Lecturer Han Qin’s digital art courses at Stony Brook University and Long Island Explorium, focusing on the balance of local community needs fueled with artistic insight on environmental justice. Supported by the Museum Association of New York (MANY) and the “Building Capacity, Creating Sustainability, Growing Accessibility,” an IMLS CARES Act grant project designed to help museums impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic share their collections and reach audiences who cannot physically visit their museums.

This exhibition was curated with the goal to not only display striking and powerful visual messages but also to spark conversation among a wide audience range and to open doors to social, economic, and environmental justice. It demonstrates a view that artists and curators can successfully portray, analyze, and stimulate discourse on environmental challenges that affect our most vulnerable citizens and communities.

“We are ecstatic to receive this award and deliver this exciting exhibit to continue to be responsive and reflective of the diverse communities we aim to reach. We strive to use technology to deliver pieces that spark dialogue and action.”, said Angeline Judex, MPA, Executive Director, Long Island Explorium.

“The Long Island Explorium was selected due to our perseverance in the face of the devastating COVID-19 pandemic and our commitment to STEM and those in our communities on Long Island and New York,” explained Lisa Collet Rodriguez, M.S. Director, Digital Media/Marketing, Long Island Explorium. “We are pleased to work with Han Qin from Stony Brook University and the student artists that spent time researching, analyzing, and then visually representing some of the environmental issues affecting high need communities throughout Long Island and beyond. One of the program’s initial goals is to assist and successfully respond to one of the biggest challenges created by the pandemic: how we reach audiences that cannot visit the Long Island Explorium in person. The pandemic has provided the Explorium with an opportunity to re-imagine our program delivery methods and engage our online audiences through meaningful content on a much larger scale, while advocating and encouraging positive action.”

Long Island Explorium’s new exhibit shows resilience

Known for their hands-on maker space that allows kids of all ages to learn concepts in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics), the nonprofit mixes fun with technology and science. However, until mid-June, the Explorium has been turned into an art gallery.

Angeline Judex, executive director, said the idea to create a collaborative experience at the space came not even two months ago. The idea behind the eight-week-long exhibit titled The Resilience Project revolves around the perseverance and resilience of the human spirit during these challenging times.

“It’s really symbolic,” she said. “Because at the end of the day, we’ve got to learn something from this whole craziness.”

In collaboration with lead artist, Tali Hinkis — also known as LoVid, with Kyle Lapidus — the Explorium has become home to works of art inspired by nature and science by eight different artists, local and international.

“Their artistic creations capture visitors visually as well as engage the mind in exploring issues of social change, environmental justice and the intersection of art and technology,” Hinkis said.

All artworks on display will be sold to support the Explorium’s STEAM programming targeted at students in need and, each week, one artist will be featured alongside an interactive STEM activity for all visitors.

Over the last several weeks, the Long Island Explorium, located at Port Jeff Harbor, 101 E. Broadway, Port Jefferson, has been serving up something different.

“This unique collaboration seeks to capture the essence of nature as it grows and survives the elements,” Judex said. “We know that science helps push the boundaries of what is possible. Hence, we too will grow, survive and push through challenges.”

This weekend, for example, under the theme of Dye-ing up a Storm!, the interactive activity uses natural dyes, and helps celebrate artist Brooke Singer’s piece, “Site Profile Flag,” which uses the physical, biological and chemical properties of soil to create brightly colored flags.

Visitors on Saturday, May 22, and on Sunday can use pigments found in nature with a little bit of heat and have the opportunity to use the textile dyes for themselves.

The Resilience Project kicked off April 23 and will continue through June 13.

It’s time to break the stigma.

The Long Island Explorium recently announced they were selected by the Association of Science and Technology Centers — along with 27 museums across the country — to participate in IF/THEN Gender Equity Grants, an initiative of Lyda Hill Philanthropies.

More than $300,000 is being awarded to ASTC-member science and technology centers and museums, seeking to address equity in gender representation across museum content and launch projects that increase the representation of women and gender minorities in STEM, as part of their broader efforts to advance diversity, accessibility and inclusion.

Executive Director of the Explorium Angeline Judex said the grant will help fund a multitude of different projects that will help amplify gender representation in STEM and enhance their workshops within the community and in schools.

Judex said she believes young girls can succeed as scientists and innovators in STEM.

“Girls and young women do have a seat at the table,” she said.

The Long Island Explorium, located at 101 E Main Street, is a 501c3 nonprofit, and is chartered with the New York State Department of Education. Their vision is to be a leader in STEM discovery, learning and innovations to shape future generations, allowing children in kindergarten through grade six to express themselves as future leaders and innovators.

“Our museum is small in footprint, but our impact is huge,” Judex said. “I’m excited because the grant validates all the impactful work we have done in the past to support young girls in science forward. We’re extremely honored.”

STEM, like many other fields, have been associated as a male-dominated career. The IF/THEN organization strives to get more girls and young women into the science, technology and engineering paths.

“We’re all helping to change the cultural mindset of what is acceptable, what is right, what is not right and who belongs where,” Judex said. “And now we’re part of that journey to encourage and promote gender equity.”

With the mindset of “If you can see it, you can be it,” Judex said the change won’t be easy. “There’s no a magic button that resets to this new normal,” she said. “But it’s a journey we want to be on.”

1. Build physically healthier children.
Nowhere is better than the outdoors for running, jumping, throwing balls, catching, pulling things, lifting, and carrying objects. All these actions require motor skills that improve with practice. Playing in the sun builds vitamin D in the body, which means stronger bones and less likelihood of chronic diseases. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, many children have vitamin D deficiencies.

2. Contribute to cognitive and social/emotional development.
They are more likely to be inventive, explore and learn about the world around them, and use their abilities. These interactions help improve communication, cooperation, and organizational skills. Additionally, fresh air and play reduce stress levels.

3. Improve sensory skills.
An optometry and vision science study showed children who play outside regularly have better distance vision than children who are always indoors. Watching television use only two senses (hearing and sight). This can negatively affect the development of perceptual abilities.

4. Increase attention spans.
Children who play outdoors regularly are more curious, self-directed, and likely to stay with a task longer. Children who spend most of their time indoors with little exposure to activities requiring their initiation and follow-through show less ability to initiate or participate in new activities.

5. Grow in happiness and immunity.
Outdoor light stimulates the pineal gland. This part of the brain is vital to keeping our immune system strong and making us feel happier. Spending time in nature is also associated with improving mood and happiness. An added bonus is that children who identify with nature are more likely to become adults who appreciate nature and want to protect the environment.

Field of the Month: Physics

Welcome to the Long Island Explorium blog! Each month, the Field of the Month blogs will reflect the theme featured in STEM WonderLab , our monthly subscription box, which comes filled with a variety of at-home experiments, access to a Google Classroom so you can chat with Explorium Educators, access to a live Zoom workshop session, and infographics on different underrepresented historical figures in STEM. While the contents offered in the STEM WonderLab box are only available to those who subscribe, our blog, and the resources that accompany it, will be open to everyone!

Curious STEM explorers will be able to dive deeper into the set theme, learning about some of the major branches in each field, what scientists from that field can do, how they can begin their path towards this career, and even find additional educational resources, like interview videos featuring real-life scientists from the If/Then Collection or I am a Scientist . We hope that this space will inspire more young people to pursue a future in STEM and help those already on their educational/career paths but may feel a bit lost on what direction they want to take. Continue reading to learn about the first field that we’ll be discussing: physics!

What is Physics?

The word physics comes from the Greek word physikḗ , which means “the knowledge of nature.” Physics is the science of matter , energy , mass , and force , as well as their motion and behavior throughout space and time. It is one branch of the larger category of Natural Sciences .

What does a physicist do?

Many people who study physics will fall into one of three general roles: theoretical physicists , experimental physicists , and applied physicists . Theoretical physicists develop theories or models that can predict particular events and behaviors and explain how certain aspects of the world work; this could be in any field, from the impossibly small in the quantum world to the gigantic expanses of distant galaxies in cosmology, to anything in between! The experimental physicists then test these theories and models to determine their limits and find other approaches, if necessary. Applied physicists will then take these findings and apply them to real-world settings.

However, these are not the only jobs physicists can have. Some will use their background in physics and apply it to other areas, such as education, climate forecasting, robotics, or medicine. This is called an interdisciplinary field and will be discussed more in the Branches of Physics section.

Branches of Physics

The different areas of physics can be divided into two categories: Classical Physics and Modern Physics . This division is primarily based on when specific topics were developed; those developed before the 20th century are considered classical, while those created during the 20th century or later are considered modern. Each area of study within these two categories can be further divided into smaller, more specialized disciplines described below. Please be aware that, since physics is such a vast field, the list we have provided is not exhaustive and only includes some of the major areas of study. However, more information on these areas can be found in our Resources section.

Classical Physics:

Includes any topics discovered before 1900 A.D.
More complete when compared to modern physics, and its theories are more widely applicable to everyday life.
Mainly concerned with Newton’s Laws of Motion , Newton’s Law of Universal Gravitation , Maxwell’s Kinetic Theory , and thermodynamics .

Energy and matter are considered separate entities.

Notable branches:
Acoustics : the study of sound and sound waves, including applications for seismic waves, shock and vibration, noise, music, communication, hearing, underwater sound, and atmospheric sound.
Optics : the study of the physical properties of light, including mirrors, lenses, and colors.
Classical mechanics : the study of the motion of bodies in a frame of reference.
Electromagnetics : the study of electrical and magnetic fields.
Thermodynamics : the physics of heat.

Modern physics:

Refers to topics developed after 1900 A.D.
Mainly concerned with Einstein’s Theory of Relativity and Planck’s Quantum Theory .
Explains phenomena that occur on very small and very large scales and at extremely high speeds.
Energy and matter are considered different forms of each other.
Notable branches:
Relativity : the study of systems displaying characteristics of Einstein’s theory of relativity, which generally involves moving at speeds very close to the speed of light
Quantum mechanics : the study of science where the smallest discrete values, or quanta, of matter and energy, become relevant
Cosmology : The study of the universe as a whole, including its origins and evolution, as well as the future changes it may undergo.
Nuclear Physics : the study of the physical properties of the atomic nucleus
Atomic Physics : the study of atoms, specifically the electron properties of the atom (not to be confused with Nuclear Physics, which solely studies the nucleus of the atom)

It is also possible to combine two fields to create something called an interdisciplinary field, as we mentioned above. Some examples include, but are not limited to:

Astrophysics : the study of the physical properties of objects in space
Biophysics : the study of physics in living systems, from cells and microbes to plants, animals, and ecosystems
Geophysics : the study of the physical properties of the Earth
Physics Education : the study of methods currently used to teach physics; typically in high school and college
Meteorology : the combination of atmospheric chemistry and atmospheric physics, which focuses on the processes and phenomena of the atmosphere, climate, and weather.
Physical Oceanography : the study of physical conditions and processes within the ocean, such as the motions and physical properties of ocean water.

How do I become a physicist?

So you want to study physics. That’s great! Here, we’ve provided some information on a few attributes that can be beneficial to those looking to enter this field, as well as a general education outline. However, it’s important to remember that there is no right or wrong way to become a physicist, nor is there just one path that works for everyone. People learn and succeed through different methods and at different paces, and that’s perfectly alright. Additionally, if you find that you may not have all of the skills listed below, that’s fine too! No one is born with these skills; they are learned and improved upon over many years.

Beneficial skills, abilities, and traits:

Analytics and problem-solving
Mathematics and computing
Enthusiasm for research
Communication; Ability to visualize and explain concepts and ideas clearly
Ability to work well independently and as part of a team

Education:

Generally, in the United States, those hoping to become physicists will need to obtain at least a Master’s Degree in physics or a related field (i.e., engineering, material sciences, mathematics, etc.). However, a PhD is preferred
Many entry-level positions will only require a Bachelor’s Degree
Teaching high school and community college requires at least a Master’s Degree
Teaching university requires a PhD
About 4-6 years of related work experience is necessary
Young people hoping to get a head start on gaining experience can look for camps, clubs, programs, and volunteer opportunities through local universities and organizations

Terms

Matter: any substance that has mass and occupies space.

Energy: the capacity of a physical system to perform work.

Mass: the amount of matter in an object; when on Earth, the mass of an object is the same as its weight.

Force: a push or pull upon an object; can cause an object to slow down, remain in motion, or change shape.

Natural Sciences: a branch of science that deals with the physical world (i.e., physics, chemistry, geology, biology).

Theory: a plausible or scientifically acceptable general principle, or body or principles, offered to explain phenomena.

Model: a representation of an idea, object, process, or system used to describe and explain phenomena that cannot be experienced directly.

Interdisciplinary Field: relating to more than one branch of knowledge.

Newton’s Laws of Motion: created by Isaac Newton in 1686, describes the relationship between an object’s motion and the force acting upon it.

First Law (Law of Inertia): An object at rest will stay at rest, and an object in motion will remain in motion unless acted on by an external force
Second Law (Force = Mass x Acceleration): the greater the object’s mass, the more force is required to accelerate the object.
Third Law (Action = Reaction): every action has an equal and opposite reaction.

Newton’s Law of Universal Gravitation: created by Isaac Newton in 1687; a mathematical formula that describes the force of gravitational attraction between two bodies, in relation to their mass and distance.

Maxwell’s Kinetic Theory: created by James Clerk Maxwell in 1859; model that describes the thermodynamic behavior of gases.

Einstein’s Theory of Relativity: created by Albert Einstein in the early 1900’s, encompasses two interrelated concepts that apply to specific cosmological and astronomical phenomena.

Special Relativity: theory of the structure of spacetime; describes what happens when the speed of an object approaches the speed of light.

General Relativity: theory of gravitation; concerns the warping of spacetime due to the gravitational fields of massive bodies, like stars and planets.

Planck’s Quantum Theory: created by Max Planck in 1900; hypothesized that the energy of light is proportional to its frequency, and the constant that relates them is known as Planck’s constant ( h ).

Phenomena: an observable, rare, or significant fact or event.

THE LONG ISLAND EXPLORIUM AWARDED IF/THEN® Gender Equity Grant .

THE Long Island Explorium is pleased to announce that we have been selected by the Association of Science and Technology Centers (ASTC) along with 27 museums from across the country to participate in IF/THEN® Gender Equity Grants . Through the support of IF/THEN® , an initiative of Lyda Hill Philanthropies® , more than $300,000 is being awarded to ASTC-member science and technology centers and museums in the United States seeking to address equity in gender representation across museum content.

The IF/THEN® Gender Equity Grant program offers science centers the opportunity to launch projects that increase the representation of women and gender minorities in STEM, as part of their broader efforts to advance diversity, accessibility, inclusion, and equity.

IF/THEN® partnered with ASTC and its network of nearly 400 science and technology centers and museums across the United States to provide a multi-round grant program of $650,000 for ASTC-member museums to showcase greater gender diversity across their exhibits, displays, and materials by using assets from the IF/THEN® Collection. This investment is particularly needed: according to preliminary information collected by ASTC, women make up just 21% of STEM professionals in museum exhibits.

The IF/THEN® grant will support the Long Island Explorium ’s efforts to amplify gender representation in both museum content and programming through the creation of new museum signage, the production of media content, and the development of new content highlighting women in STEM to augment our existing STEM workshops. “ “We are very excited to be part of this IF/THEN® project and to show all who visit and learn with us that #shecanstem! All young girls deserve a future in STEM and “IF she can see it, THEN she can be it”. We look forward to inspiring girls to pursue careers in STEM”, said Angeline Judex, Executive Director.

Building Capacity, Creating Sustainability, Growing Accessibility

The Long Island Explorium is pleased to announce that we have been selected by the Museum Association of New York (MANY) with 98 museums from across New York State to participate in “Building Capacity, Creating Sustainability, Growing Accessibility”, an IMLS CARES Act grant project designed to help museums impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic share their collections and reach audiences who cannot physically visit their museums. Staff will be trained to use new hardware and software to develop programs that will engage their communities and reach new audiences.

The grant is an in-depth partnership for two years designed to strengthen museum virtual programs. In addition to the training, museums will receive hardware and software equivalent to a $5,000 in-kind donation.

“We are honored to be awarded IMLS CARES act funding and excited to be able to make an impact on the work of our colleagues and their museums across New York State,” said Erika Sanger, MANY Executive Director. “We are living in an age of transition, experiencing a radical shift in our ways of learning and communicating. The group selected captures the diversity of our shared history in NY and our nation. The stories embodied in the museums’ collections and the storytelling talents of their interpretive staff are the heart of the project.”

In this two-year program, museums will identify a program to virtually deliver to their audiences, focusing on developing programs from stories found in their collections that reveal cultural and racial diversity in their communities.“We are ecstatic to receive this award to continue to be responsive and reflective of the diverse communities we aim to reach. We aim to build upon a current exhibit, “ Rain Gardens: Linking Water, Wildlife, and Wisdom ”, and use technology to develop a video/ audio series that focuses on the rich heritage of the indigenous peoples of Long Island and their contributions to Long Island”, said Angeline Judex, MPA, Executive Director, Long Island Explorium.

“The Long Island Explorium was selected due to our perseverance in the face of the devastating COVID-19 pandemic and our commitment to STEM and those in our communities on Long Island and in New York,” explained Lisa Collet Rodriguez, M.S. Junetheeth is a day of reflection and resolution for many in our community. I struggled with how best to send a message out in response to the great pain and anger that has enveloped our communities across America and do the message the justice it deserves. Racial inequality and injustice are issues that permeate all areas of our lives. Solutions to these issues are yet to be found but we welcome the discussions and learning.

We all stand together against racism and racial injustice. We have a duty and responsibility to our future generations to actively be part of the change that we would like to see.

For the past 15 years, the Explorium has tried our best to bring our resources and STEM programming to underserved communities all across Long Island and beyond. During this pandemic, we have had insightful conversations with the communities we serve. We have listened and learned that they are experiencing daunting challenges that would require significant resources to overcome in the upcoming months. We hope to work more closely with these communities to better serve their needs and help them overcome the significant barriers they are facing. Like all science and technology centers and museums, we have a common vision that ALL people are able to “access, participate and benefit equitably from educational opportunities and scientific contributions to society”.

I am committed to ensuring that our Explorium continues to be a welcoming and inclusive place for our communities to participate and enjoy. We are not perfect and we have more work to do in listening more deeply to the communities we serve and in helping make the world more equitable and just. A new sensory garden has been installed outside the Long Island Explorium in Port Jefferson, hoping to give those passing through the village an educational and therapeutic experience.

Sensory gardens are outdoor environments with flower aromas, plant colors, kinetic sculptures and interactive devices that encourage sensory play, learning and experience using all senses.

“These gardens have been shown to offer a range of health, therapeutic and educational benefits to all visitors, with particular benefits to children with sensory challenges, especially those on the autistic spectrum,” said Angeline Judex, executive director of the explorium.

For the past year, the explorium has been working toward creating the space on its front lawn. It all began when Ellen Kushner, treasurer of Decision Women in Commerce and Professions, brought her grandchildren there to play last December.

“I was so impressed with it and they had so much fun,” she said, “I thought to myself that we absolutely had to get involved and give the explorium some funding.”

She said everyone at Decision was on board with the idea to fund the garden, and at the organization’s 40th anniversary dinner in June they gifted the
explorium the grant.

The garden took about $2,000 to create and has been made possible by Decision’s funding, along with a donation and consultation from Port Jefferson Station-based Kunz Greenhouses as well as the village gardener, Caran Markson.

The garden transformed the grass that was originally outside, now including a solar fountain, a pathway of stones and several dozen types of plant species. The garden is more than 70 percent native, with flowers, leaves and stalks that provide food and habitats for wildlife, deep-root systems that purify water along with beauty that nurtures the senses.

“We specifically wanted plants that appeal to the five senses,” said Jacqueline Grennon Brooks, senior adviser to the explorium. “We wanted them to be visually interesting with the variety of fragrances and textures … ones that produce sound when swaying or when touched, and herbs or plants with edibles parts.”

She added, “Research indicates that at the 70 percent native mark, we can reestablish important insect and bird populations.”

Although it’s helpful to the environment, village Trustee Bruce D’Abramo loved the idea that kids can come to the garden and do what they want.

“You don’t have to tell them what to do,” he said. “They make the decisions.”

He added that the space is going to be seen by all walking through the village.

“This area gets a lot of foot traffic,” he said. “Just last weekend at the Dragon Boat Race Festival, 2,500 people walked right past this park.”

The ribbon-cutting ceremony officially opened the garden Sept. 17, and will be open year round, even when the explorium is closed.

“People should come visit and be amazed by the transformation of our front yard into a delightful garden that both teaches and brings joy to everyone,” Judex said. ”I love seeing how people get excited about the sensory garden and want to create one in their own yard.”

The Explorium is expanding and looking for part-time educators and museum guides for our weekend open hours on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday, public holidays, winter and summer programs. We seek imaginative, innovative, and out-going individuals with knowledge of how people learn and the skills to effectively offer challenge-based, interdisciplinary STEM activities.

Experience in one or more of the following highly desirable:
1. Elementary and secondary school coding and robotics

The National Museum of Mathematics Extends Math Outreach Program to Encourage Early Math Fluency

The National Museum of Mathematics (MoMath) in Nomad is continuing its innovative math outreach program, MoMath 2 Go: the Family Math Initiative, with a partnership with the Long Island Explorium in Port Jefferson. This program is designed to help families learn how to comfortably discuss math with preschool through second-grade children and to involve parents who may not have access to the latest in math education.

The program was designed as part of a collaborative study with the University of Chicago Science of Learning Center (SLC). Susan C. Levine, Professor and Chair of the Department of Psychology and SLC Director, led the SLC team in discovering that conversations about math between children and parents can help reduce the math achievement gap and increase children’s spatial fluency. MoMath’s partnership aims to build on this research.

MoMath 2 Go: the Family Math Initiative features two MoMath exhibitions, Ring of Fire” and “Miles of Tiles,” along with specially created MoMath 2 Go “tip cards” that facilitate math-related discussions for parents and children. The two exhibits aim to demonstrate the ability to stimulate early math fluency in children.

“We are pleased to partner with the Long Island Explorium in bringing the MoMath 2 Go program to reach additional communities,” said Cindy Lawrence, Executive Director of the Long Island Explorium. “We have made it our mission to partner with like-minded institutions to enhance our innovative and cutting edge programs and resources for families and children.”

At a glance, the Long Island Explorium building looks like an old-school log cabin compared to the great glass facade of the neighboring Port Jefferson Village Center and the rustic townhouses or surrounding businesses.

If anything, both the building and the Long Island Explorium program, which brings in school-aged children from all across Long Island in education programs, stand out. They have stood out in no small part thanks to Angeline Judex, the executive director of the explorium.

Judex has been a part of the Port Jefferson program for close to two years. “She has a great desire to work with people, and she’s very honoring of other people’s perspectives,” said Jacqueline Grennon Brooks, the president of the Long Island Explorium. “Through that dialogue with people is how we can achieve these goals.”

Every year the explorium welcomes close to 10,000 young students through its doors. Inside is a number of puzzles and interlocking machinery, all part of a teaching philosophy called constructionism, which asks young people to use ingenuity and logic to solve problems on their own.

“She’s made her program very successful, and she’s brought in students from all over Long Island,” Port Jeff trustee Bruce D’Abramo said. “She’s one of the reasons that Port Jefferson is a place for learning and life sciences.”

The explorium has become a lightning rod for STEAM education and creativity in Port Jefferson since it was created in 2004, then bearing the name The Maritime Explorium. Since then, programs have expanded outward from Port Jeff, but the most sizable events still happen within Port Jeff Village, often spilling out from its log cabin building and onto Harborfront Park. In November the explorium received $43,626 in grant funds to install native plant rain gardens in high visibility areas such as in front of its building on East Broadway and the corner of East Broadway and Main Street.

While the Mini Maker’s Faire had its fourth year in 2018, under Judex, the event gained official status with the larger Makers Faire organization. The past two events brought thousands of people to the village who experienced many things from amateur DIY robotics to Colonial-era cooking and blacksmithing. Now expanding on the idea, the executive director has brought in past faire participants for “makers spotlights,” which show guests at the explorium their projects and explain to them how they created them.

“I have found her to be very personable, very organized and very focused,” said village administrator Robert Juliano. “She has a sunny disposition and always looking to make things better for the explorium and the community. ”

In August 2017 the explorium hosted a watching party for the total eclipse of the sun. Even then, with so many heads turned to the sky, the explorium was pushing the scientific impact of the event by having those who attended help to accumulate scientific data to be used by researchers across the country. Children of all ages charted the temperature, percentage of the sky covered by clouds, the color of the sky and the visibility of the sun every five minutes until the conclusion of the eclipse. All the data was collected and sent to NASA.

Brooks said since Judex has become the executive director, the explorium has focused more and more on outreach outside the Port Jeff community. The explorium hosts outreach programs for public school teachers called Educate the Educators that sends explorium staff out to school districts such as William Floyd to help those teachers embrace problem-based education techniques, often on a small budget. In the past instead of simply teaching kids about earthquakes with pictures and PowerPoints, Judex used gelatin and had kids build houses that could resist the constant trembling.

“Because of economics, going out on field trips is being done much less than it has been done in the past, so what we do is we bring our program to school,” Brooks said. “This takes the explorium model to other aspects of their teaching program.”

Judex and the explorium are not slowing down either. The Mini Maker’s Faire will return next year, and the executive director already has plans to make additions to the building interior, working with a local Girl Scout to create a programmable robotic hand.

If anything, Judex and the explorium have become much less of a hidden gem, and more of a shining jewel in the Port Jefferson community.

Federal officials on Tuesday announced almost $2.6 million in grants for Long Island Sound environmental projects, including $500,000 for New York projects.

Projects on Long Island include a plan for a mesh sea turtle statue to be stuffed with cleaned-up plastic, water quality testing in Hempstead Harbor and rain gardens in Port Jefferson.

“The funding is seed money, the funding is investments,” Environmental Protection Agency Regional Director Pete Lopez said during the presentation at Port Jefferson Village Center. “The funding is leading to improvements in the Long Island Sound.”

The 36 grants funded through the Long Island Sound Futures Fund combines money from the EPA and National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, a congressionally mandated organization that administers the grant.

Long Island projects include:

$67,500 for Group for the East End to remove invasive species, restore habitat and conduct outreach at Hallock State Park Preserve in Jamesport.
$75,000 for water quality monitoring at Hempstead Harbor. Funding will go through the village of Sea Cliff and Hempstead Harbor Protection Committee to the Coalition to Save Hempstead Harbor.
$41,000 for Audubon New York to hold a program to encourage people to “share the shore” with birds, including the piping plover and terns.
$45,000 for Citizens Campaign for the Environment to conduct an anti-plastic pollution campaign, including against plastic straws. Adrienne Esposito, executive director of the group, said a mesh statue of a sea turtle planned for Sunken Meadow State Park will be filled with plastic collected in beach cleanups.
$43,000 to the Maritime Explorium in Port Jefferson to build a series of rain gardens, which help clean storm runoff and educate the public.

Grants also went to projects in New York City, Westchester, Connecticut, Massachusetts and Vermont, which are in the Long Island Sound watershed. The money will be matched with $3.1 million in grants from local governments and community groups.

Have you ever listened to a child chuckling while she witnesses the robot she designed turn in circles? Have you ever looked into the eyes of a child telling you that he saved for a year to buy a 3-D printer kit because he learned from you that he could build one? Have you ever watched a toddler painstakingly build a maze only to discover it didn’t work, and then build a new one that did?

We have.

Many people don’t think of museums as making social change in communities, but the Maritime Explorium is a rising star on Long Island as a lighthouse of educational programs that foster inventive thinking. We welcome over 10,000 visitors annually, and those children and their families were engaged in smart science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics (STEAM) learning – all while playing and laughing and connecting socially. We are proud of our setting, but the Explorium is more than a place. It is a way of learning and living, and numerous invitations to share our work serve as proof of the success of our programs.

The Maritime Explorium was launched in 2004 by a consortium of scientists, educators and entrepreneurial residents seeking to provide a rich educational STEM experience to the Long Island and NY metro area community. In May of 2005, the Explorium was designated as a 501(c)3 not-for-profit and was chartered with the New York State Department of Education. Our vision is to be a world class leader in STEM discovery, learning and innovation that will shape the intellect, social values and principles of future generations. The Explorium is housed in the historic Chandlery Building in Port Jefferson Village, New York.

The Explorium illustrates the idea that people learn best through minds-on experiences and reflection on those experiences. That is why we offer school-based programs that reach another 3,000 students, as we teach scores of educators how to lead inquiry-rich, experiential classrooms. We help people of all ages who come to us thinking that science is boring, or math is hard, or art is easy, or tech is for geeks or engineering is for boys – and we help them realize that we are all lifelong STEAM citizens living, playing and working in our STEAM world. We are our area’s largest Mini Maker Faire that has welcomed over 5,000 in the past three years.

We seek social justice. The Explorium makes STEAM education accessible to all. We work collaboratively with Hofstra University and Stony Brook University to develop offerings based on leading edge studies on how people meaningfully learn, and we work closely with many community agencies to bring our forward thinking programs to school districts across Long Island, especially schools in high-need communities. Our partnerships with the private sector and community organizations aim to create a robust ecosystem of committed and passionate stakeholders determined to nurture the future generation. We are all responsible for ensuring the success of our young, both in play and study. Let’s work together to bring about a social change through the empowerment of our young using innovative learning strategies in STEAM.
